Costal Transportation

Coastal Transportation of Seattle, WA, awarded a contract to Bowman Refrigeration to retrofit two vessels, the Coastal Nomad and the Coastal Progress, from forced air evaporators to convection coils.  These were the latest in a series of upgrades Coastal has been doing in their fleet over the last several years.  Both projects commenced in late spring of 2006 with June completion dates.

Given the extremely rough duty of break-bulk cargo handling, it has been Coastal’s policy to use convection coils, as they are far more rugged than forced air evaporators.  They have no moving parts or electrical components that might fail or require access when the ship is at sea with a full cargo hold.  We provided galvanized steel spiral finned convection coils fabricated from galvanized steel to meet their requirements.

Starting at the top, the photos to the right show the forced air evaporators that were replaced; urethane foam being chipped away in coordination with the Seattle Fire Department to allow for safe hot work; framework being installed for mounting the new coils; and mounting and piping of the new coils.

Performing hot work in close proximity to foam requires strict adherence to procedure.  Bowman Refrigeration has a great deal of experience with this type of work, and has played an active role in setting the standard for safe practices in hazardous locations.
